7. Stumming Patterns in 4/4 Using Upstrokes and Downstrokes (BC-103)

Topic Progress:

Now we’re going to explore strumming patterns using downstrokes and upstrokes. When we used these before, we counted using the word “and” between each downbeat, “1 … & … 2 … & … 3 … & … 4 … & …”. We played using a downstroke on the downbeat, and an upstroke on the upbeat, as follows:

options width=700 stave-distance=30 tabstave notation=true tablature=false time=4/4 notes :8S Bd/4 :8S Bu/4 :8S Bd/4:8S Bu/4 :8S Bd/4 :8S Bu/4 :8S Bd/4:8S Bu/4 |:8S Bd/4 :8S Bu/4 :8S Bd/4:8S Bu/4:8S Bd/4 :8S Bu/4 :8S Bd/4:8S Bu/4 text :h,.1,G, ++,.13,.font=Times-8-,:8,1,&,2,&,3,&,4,&,|,1,&,2,&,3,&,4,&

= Downstroke= Upstroke

As before, we’re going to explore creating some rhythmic variation by skipping one or more strokes.

Simple Strumming Pattern #1 – Skipping an Upstroke

For this strumming pattern, we’re going to skip the first upstroke in each measure (shown in brackets as (&), below the staff). Make sure to include your ghost strum on the upbeat we are skipping by doing an upstroke without hitting the strings. We’ll try this first on muted strings, then on our chords:

Simple Strumming Pattern #2 – Skipping an Upstroke and a Downstroke

Next, we’re going to take the pattern we’ve just been practicing and skip the another beat – the third downbeat. So we’ll be skipping the first upstroke, as we did in the previous example, and the third downstroke in each measure (shown in brackets as (&) and (3), below the staff). Remember to use your ghost strumming technique by continuing to move your strumming hand as if you are strumming the strings without actually striking the strings on these beats. As before, we will start by practicing on muted strings, then move on to our chords.
